Cafés, hidden photo spots, free museums, and day trips that made me fall in love with London.
When I first went to London, I expected iconic landmarks, rainy weather, and endless cups of tea. What I didn't expect was to leave already planning my next visit.
London is one of those cities where every neighborhood feels different. One minute you're walking past royal palaces, the next you're wandering colorful streets, discovering cozy cafés, or finding a quiet garden tucked between historic buildings.
The best part? You don't need an unlimited budget to enjoy it.
Here's exactly how I explored London, and the places I'd recommend to anyone visiting for the first time.
Getting Around London
One of my biggest surprises was just how easy London's transportation system is.
Forget renting a car. I relied almost entirely on the Tube, buses, and walking.
A few tips:
Download Citymapper before you go, it made navigating incredibly easy.
Use a contactless credit card or Apple Pay to tap in and out.
Walk whenever you can. Some of my favorite places weren't on my itinerary, I simply stumbled upon them while wandering.
My Favorite Places in London
Tower Bridge
There's something magical about seeing Tower Bridge for the first time.
I visited in the evening when the clouds rolled in over the River Thames, and it quickly became one of my favorite photos from the trip.
Take time to walk along the riverside paths instead of rushing to the bridge itself. The views constantly change depending on where you're standing.
The Secret Big Ben Photo Spot
Everyone takes a picture directly in front of Big Ben.
Instead, walk underneath the archway beside Westminster Bridge.
Framed by the stone arch, Big Ben suddenly looks even more dramatic, especially if you visit when the skies are cloudy.
It became one of my favorite photos from the entire trip.
Photo Tip: Visit early morning or later in the evening for fewer people.
Carnaby Street
If you're looking for London's personality, you'll find it here.
Colorful storefronts, independent boutiques, cafés, and constantly changing decorations make Carnaby Street feel completely different every season.
Even if you don't buy anything, it's worth wandering through.
Chinatown
One of my favorite evenings ended in Chinatown.
The bright red lanterns hanging above the streets make it feel completely different from the rest of London.
It's also one of the best places in the city to grab dinner if you're looking for something affordable.
Borough Market
Come hungry.
Seriously.
Whether you're craving pastries, coffee, sandwiches, or international food, Borough Market has something for everyone.
It's busy, but for good reason.
I could easily spend an entire morning wandering through all the vendors.
The Victoria & Albert Museum
One of the best things about London?
Many of its museums are completely free.
The Victoria & Albert Museum became one of my favorites, not because of the incredible collections, but because the architecture itself feels like art.
Even if you're not usually a museum person, this one is worth visiting.
London's Most Colorful Street
One of the prettiest places I visited wasn't famous for a monument at all.
The pastel houses of Notting Hill look almost unreal.
If you're looking for Instagram-worthy photos, this neighborhood is full of colorful streets, quiet cafés, and charming corners that feel completely different from central London.
Go early in the morning if you want photos without crowds.
Stops Worth Visiting
Ralph's Coffee
If you're already shopping around Bond Street, stop at Ralph's Coffee.
It's elegant, relaxing, and the outdoor seating overlooking the iconic red phone booths makes it one of the prettiest coffee stops in London.
Amie Wine Studio
This ended up being one of my favorite discoveries.
It has a cozy atmosphere, incredible wine, and feels much more local than many tourist spots.
If you're looking for somewhere to unwind after walking all day, I'd absolutely recommend it.
Ballie Ballerson
One of the most unexpected experiences of the trip was visiting a ball pit cocktail bar.
It was playful, completely different, and honestly one of the funniest nights of the trip.
London has so many experiences beyond museums and landmarks, so don't be afraid to try something unexpected.
My Favorite Free Things to Do
One of London's biggest advantages is that you don't need to constantly spend money.
Some of my favorite memories came from completely free activities:
Walking along the River Thames
Exploring Queen Mary's Rose Garden
Visiting free museums
Wandering through Notting Hill
Watching street performers
Window shopping around Mayfair
Exploring Carnaby Street
Relaxing in Hyde Park or Kensington Gardens
The Best Day Trip: Oxford
If you have extra time, don't stay in London every single day.
Oxford was one of my favorite day trips.
It's only about an hour away by train, incredibly walkable, and feels like stepping into another world.
Historic colleges, beautiful gardens, charming streets, and peaceful parks make it the perfect escape from the city.
If you only have time for one day trip, I'd choose Oxford.
Budget Tips
London has a reputation for being expensive, but it doesn't have to be.
Here's what helped me save money:
Grab Tesco Meal Deals for inexpensive lunches.
Walk whenever possible.
Take advantage of free museums.
Book trains in advance for day trips.
Mix affordable meals with a few memorable restaurants.
Stay in one area instead of constantly taking taxis.
I found that balancing inexpensive meals with a few special experiences made the trip feel luxurious without overspending.
Final Thoughts
London surprised me in the best way.
Yes, you'll visit the famous landmarks. But what you'll remember most are the little moments: wandering colorful neighborhoods, finding your favorite café, watching the city from the Thames, or accidentally discovering a quiet street that isn't on any itinerary.
That's what makes London special.
It's a city that rewards curiosity.
So leave a little room in your schedule, put your phone away every once in a while, and simply wander.
Some of my favorite memories happened when I had absolutely no destination in mind.
